A 28-year-old woman was found dead from a gunshot inside a military facility in the occupied village of Assia on Monday. Authorities initially described the death as a possible suicide, but legal experts and organizations have called for a full investigation into the circumstances, including the possibility of criminal activity or domestic violence.
The main suspect is reported to be a member of the Turkish military stationed in the area. According to local regulations in the occupied territory, courts there do not have the authority to try members of the Turkish armed forces, who are instead subject to Turkish military jurisdiction.
Hasan Esentagli, president of the Turkish Cypriot Bar Association, confirmed that local police cannot pursue the case against Turkish military personnel due to lack of jurisdiction.
Authorities are calling for transparency and a thorough investigation.
