Hail yeah! Tuesday's weather forecast

Thunderstorms and scattered showers bring a chill across the island.

Newsroom

A weak low-pressure system is hanging around Cyprus like an uninvited guest, bringing with it some moody frontal activity since last night. The morning greeted us with lingering dust, though it’s gradually settling, giving way to local rain and isolated thunderstorms. And yes, during these thunderstorms, don’t be too shocked if the skies decide to lob some hail your way. It’s nature’s way of saying, “Watch your head!”

Today: Expect mostly cloudy skies with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms popping up like surprise guests, initially in the west and north, then wandering down to the south and east. Mountains and inland areas won’t escape either; hail may crash the party during thunderstorms, so umbrellas might not be enough. Consider a helmet! Winds will be breezy, shifting from southwesterly to northwesterly, moderate to strong (4-5 Beaufort), with gusts occasionally stepping it up on the windward coasts. The sea will range from slightly rough in the east to rough elsewhere, so seafarers, keep your life jackets handy. Temperatures will take a noticeable dip: around 22°C along the coasts and inland, and a brisk 12°C up in the higher mountains.

Tonight: Clouds will hang around, with a chance of isolated showers along coastal areas. Patchy fog or mist may sneak into inland and eastern regions in the early hours, adding a mysterious, “Where am I?” vibe to your evening commute. Winds will mellow slightly to weak or moderate (3-4 Beaufort), and the sea will calm down a bit in the south and east, remaining slightly rough elsewhere.

Wednesday and Thursday: Expect partly to mostly cloudy skies with isolated rain and the occasional thunderstorm, perfect for those who enjoy unpredictable weather theater.

Friday: Some clouds will linger here and there, keeping things interesting.

Temperatures: From today until Friday, a gentle rise is expected, nudging closer to or just above the seasonal average. But don’t let the mild warmth fool you. Those hailstones mean business.

So, keep an eye on the sky, mind your head, and maybe stash that raincoat with the heavy-duty lining. Hail is in town, and it’s making a cameo appearance.
