15-year-old arrested in knife-point robbery at Limassol bakery

Alarming case puts spotlight on rising youth crime in Cyprus.

Police have arrested a 15-year-old boy in connection with a knife-point robbery at a bakery in Limassol in the early hours of June 8.

Authorities say the teen was taken into custody late last night on the basis of a court warrant and is being held to assist with the investigation.

According to police, two masked individuals stormed into the bakery around 2:30 a.m., threatening the employee with knives before grabbing the cash register and fleeing the scene. No injuries were reported, but the employee was left shaken.

Details about the second suspect remain unclear, and police have not yet announced whether any charges have been filed.

The fact that one of the suspects is just 15 has raised concern among local residents, with some calling it a troubling sign of younger people getting caught up in serious crimes.

While Cyprus generally sees low levels of violent youth crime, police say they've noticed a rise in offenses involving minors in recent years, ranging from vandalism and theft to more organized criminal activity. Officials have called for more targeted prevention and education efforts, especially in urban areas.

The investigation is ongoing.
