A 19-year-old soldier died Wednesday morning in Rhodes after an accidental grenade explosion, leaving another serviceman critically injured.
The incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. in the Afantou area, where two soldiers from a central Rhodes unit were handling weaponry and grenades. Preliminary reports indicate that the explosion happened when one of the soldiers accidentally triggered a defensive grenade, which detonated immediately.
The young soldier was killed instantly, while the second serviceman suffered severe injuries, including amputations. Doctors at Rhodes hospital are currently working to save his life.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the tragic accident, which has shocked the local military community.
