4.8 magnitude earthquake strikes off coast of Cyprus

Quake struck offshore south of Larnaca, shaking felt across much of the island.

A moderate earthquake struck off the southeastern coast of Cyprus on Monday afternoon, shaking parts of the island but causing no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported the quake at a magnitude of 4.8, occurring around 3:30 p.m. local time. The epicenter was located offshore, approximately 60 kilometers southeast of Larnaca, at a depth of 7.6 kilometers.

The Geological Survey Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment later reported a separate reading, recording the magnitude at 4.3. According to the department, the quake was detected at 3:37 p.m., with its epicenter located in the sea, 57 kilometers south of Paralimni, at a depth of 20 kilometers.

The tremor was felt in multiple districts, including Famagusta, Larnaca and Nicosia, and was perceptible in Limassol and Paphos.
