Boat goes up in flames, beachgoers unfazed

Fire extinguished by marina staff as sunbathers continue lounging on the beach

Newsroom

A fire broke out on a boat near Larnaca Marina on Sunday afternoon, sending up thick plumes of smoke, but you wouldn’t know it from the relaxed mood on the beach just a few hundred meters away.

Video footage shows the surreal contrast: while flames engulfed the vessel in the background, beachgoers continued swimming, sunbathing, and snapping selfies as if nothing was amiss.

According to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, the blaze was eventually brought under control thanks to the quick actions of Larnaca Marina staff. A small boat equipped with portable fire extinguishers managed to put out the flames on what remained of the vessel.

The Fire Service had responded with two trucks from Larnaca stations, but the burning boat had already been towed out to open sea by marina staff to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby boats. Once the situation was under control, fire crews on land withdrew.

Interestingly, a tugboat from the Cyprus Ports Authority, which is equipped to tackle fires, was unable to assist during the incident. Meanwhile, the boat had drifted into shallow waters, raising concerns about navigation safety until it could be fully secured and removed.

Authorities confirmed that the wreck will be towed to a location determined by marina management. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
