A 58-year-old Nicosia resident was arrested Sunday in connection with multiple animal abuse offenses, police said.
The arrest followed an investigation into a complaint alleging animal cruelty, including neglect, overexertion, causing unnecessary pain and suffering, improper tethering, and failure to provide appropriate care and shelter. Authorities also allege the suspect kept an unregistered dog without identification or a license.
The suspect appeared Monday before Nicosia District Court, where the case was filed for immediate trial.
The dog has been taken into custody by the authorities and is currently housed at a shelter. It is awaiting examination by a Veterinary Services officer.
The Nicosia Animal Police Unit is continuing its investigation.
