A man was fined 173,876 Turkish lira (approximately 3,819 euros) after a video emerged showing him forcing a rooster to smoke a cigarette and drink raki, violating animal welfare laws.

The incident occurred in Trahoni (Demirhan), a village near occupied Nicosia. Following the video’s spread on social media, the local police, operating under the so-called Lefkosia Police Department in the Turkish-occupied northern area, launched an investigation and identified the suspect.

Authorities confirmed the man had breached animal welfare regulations. The veterinary department imposed the administrative fine.

The case prompted strong public criticism, with officials pledging to continue efforts against animal cruelty.
