Cyprus collects about 70,000 units of blood each year through voluntary donations, placing the country among the top in Europe in meeting its national blood supply needs, the Ministry of Health said Friday.
The announcement, issued in recognition of World Blood Donor Day on June 14, highlighted the country’s continued reliance on voluntary blood donations to meet demand for blood and blood products.
“The Ministry of Health extends a warm and sincere thank you to Cyprus’s volunteer blood donors, who selflessly offer the invaluable gift of blood to save lives,” the statement read.
“June 14 is more than a date,” the ministry added. “It is a day of recognition and gratitude, when the global community honors blood donors for their altruistic act of humanity, hope, and social solidarity.”
This year’s World Health Organization message focuses on the hope “that is born with every drop of donated blood,” the ministry noted. “Volunteer blood donors in Cyprus are the daily bearers of this hope.”
The Blood Center, which oversees the donation program, continues to enhance the donor experience and invest in new technologies and infrastructure. Its most recent initiative includes the relocation to a new facility in Geri, aimed at improving accessibility and operational efficiency.
Voluntary blood donation is described as the foundation of the national policy for ensuring a safe, sufficient, and high-quality blood supply.
“Blood donation is not just a medical act,” the ministry said. “It is a social contract of love and trust.”
