New law aims to ease traffic jams caused by minor accidents

Drivers can now move vehicles after collisions if photos are taken and both parties agree.

Minor traffic accidents may soon cause fewer disruptions under a new law approved by Parliament last Thursday.

The legislation, introduced by DISY lawmaker Dimitris Dimitriou, allows drivers involved in minor collisions to move their vehicles off the road after documenting the scene, in an effort to reduce congestion on the road network.

Speaking on RIK radio’s “Morning Route,” Dimitriou said the law permits drivers to photograph the scene of the accident and, if both parties agree, move their vehicles to a safe location to wait for assistance. The photos and written statements will now be accepted by insurance companies as if the vehicles had remained at the scene, previously a legal requirement.

Dimitriou said he believes the measure will be effective. “Many citizens feel bad that after a minor accident, they not only inconvenience themselves but also hundreds of others trying to get to work or home,” he said. “I believe common sense will prevail.”

He also addressed concerns about insurance fraud, noting that 2 to 3 percent of accident reports are believed to be false. “These kinds of mindsets must come to an end,” he said.
