A proposal to install 32 new antennas within the British Bases at Akrotiri has prompted calls for greater transparency, with Limassol DIKO MP Panikos Leonidou backing residents seeking more information about the project.
In a written statement issued on Thursday, Leonidou said reports of the planned installations, together with information suggesting that a substantial area of land could be expropriated, have unsettled people living in the Akrotiri area and elsewhere in Limassol district.
The MP voiced his support for Kourion Municipality, local authorities, community organisations and residents who are campaigning for the protection of their environment and quality of life through peaceful and democratic action.
Leonidou said the public should be given clear and comprehensive information about the purpose of the project, its environmental implications and any possible health effects linked to the operation of the new facilities. He added that questions from local communities should be answered on the basis of scientific evidence.
He also said confidence has been weakened by what he described as insufficient public information and the failure to honour previous commitments.
According to Leonidou, projects of this scale should not proceed without meaningful consultation with local authorities and full respect for the rights of residents who may be affected.
He added that the Republic of Cyprus has a responsibility to ensure that any activity taking place within its territory complies with international law, existing agreements, environmental obligations and the rights of citizens.
Leonidou also expressed support for the peaceful protest march organised by Kourion Municipality and local groups on Saturday, August 8, saying a strong turnout would demonstrate the determination of Limassol communities to protect their environment, safeguard residents and participate in decisions that directly affect their daily lives.
