A 41-year-old Palestinian man described by authorities as a senior member of a Hamas-linked network has been arrested in Indonesia following an international arrest warrant issued by Cypriot authorities.
The man was detained on Thursday, and just 24 hours later he was extradited to Cyprus, where he is scheduled to appear in court on August 6. The hearing is expected to take place behind closed doors.
The suspect is allegedly linked to a network uncovered in Cyprus and Crete in early June, with authorities investigating possible plans connected to terrorism-related activities.
According to reports, the 41-year-old allegedly received a 37-year-old Palestinian national in Indonesia before the two travelled to Malaysia, where he is accused of training him in the manufacture of explosives.
The 37-year-old was arrested at a hotel in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, on suspicion of preparing a large-scale terrorist attack targeting Israeli interests in Greece.
The 41-year-old, referred to in media reports as the alleged "recruiter," is described by security services as a high-ranking Hamas operative.
Meanwhile, the investigation into the Greek side of the case, which centers on the 37-year-old suspect, remains at an early stage.
Authorities in both Cyprus and Greece continue examining the extent of the network’s activities and the roles allegedly played by those involved.
