Ancient ceramic vessel returns to Cyprus after being discovered in UK online auction

A 3,400-year-old Late Bronze Age juglet was intercepted by cultural heritage officers during routine digital tracking sweeps.

On June 23, 2026, the Cyprus High Commission in London officially took custody of a Late Bronze Age ceramic vessel dating back to around 1450 BC. The artifact, a small juglet classified as Base Ring I ware from the Late Cypriot I/II era, was recovered following a digital tracking effort by the island's Department of Antiquities.

The recovery process began on April 6, 2026, when specialized archaeological officers flagged the item during routine internet sweeps designed to catch illicitly traded artifacts. After department officials contacted Halls Fine Art Auctioneers, the auction house and the item's possessor agreed to pull the piece from the upcoming sale and voluntarily return it to its country of origin. Local authorities credited the smooth repatriation to the swift coordination between London-based diplomatic staff and cultural officials in Cyprus.
