The Cyprus Animal Party has criticised the government's latest cabinet reshuffle, saying it represents another missed opportunity to establish an independent Commissioner for Animal Welfare and Protection.
According to the party, it backed President Nikos Christodoulides during the 2023 presidential election after receiving a commitment that a dedicated commissioner for animal welfare would be created. The party said this was its only institutional request at the time.
Instead of creating a separate office, responsibility for animal welfare was added to the portfolio of the Commissioner for the Environment. The party said the recent reshuffle has left that arrangement unchanged and argued that the election commitment has still not been honoured.
The Animal Party said it will judge the newly appointed Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare by decisions taken and the results achieved rather than by promises.
It added that it will continue submitting proposals, monitoring government policy and advocating for the protection and welfare of animals.
