A dramatic maritime operation led to the arrest of two brothers wanted in connection with an attempted murder in Limassol, after they tried to flee Cyprus by speedboat.

The suspects, both Lebanese nationals, were intercepted on Saturday morning following a high-speed chase off the coast of Ormideia. Police from the British Sovereign Base Areas (SBAs) began pursuing the vessel after it refused to stop for inspection, prompting the involvement of the Republic of Cyprus Port and Marine Police.

During the pursuit, the situation escalated when the operator of the speedboat allegedly attempted to stab a British Bases officer with a knife, while the second suspect reportedly attacked the same officer using a wooden object. Warning shots were fired by the Cypriot marine police, forcing the boat to stop.

Assistant Limassol Police Director Lefteris Kyriakou said that additional marine units were dispatched to the scene and that SBA officers boarded the vessel and restrained both suspects. Identity checks confirmed they were the two men wanted for the attempted murder of a Syrian national in Limassol on December 20, 2025. The case includes allegations of conspiracy to commit murder, causing bodily harm, and weapons-related offenses.

The suspects and the speedboat were taken to the British Bases police station in Dhekelia. According to Kyriakou, the men were arrested for offenses committed within SBA territory. He added that the Republic of Cyprus will formally request their transfer so that outstanding arrest warrants can be enforced.
