Avakas Gorge trail closed due to safety risks

Recent hiker entrapment and hazardous conditions drive decision to keep trail closed.

Newsroom

The Department of Forests has reiterated that the popular Avakas Gorge trail, located within Akamas National Forest Park, will remain closed to the public until further notice, citing ongoing safety concerns.

The reminder follows a recent incident on March 25, 2026, during which hikers became trapped inside the gorge, prompting renewed warnings about the dangers posed by current conditions. According to officials, a combination of adverse weather, increased water flow, slippery terrain, and the risk of falling rocks and soil make the area unsafe for visitors.

The closure has technically been in effect since December 6, 2025, when authorities first issued an announcement restricting access to the gorge. Warning signs have also been placed at the entrance to deter visitors from entering the hazardous area.

Despite the inconvenience caused, the Department of Forests emphasized that the decision to keep the trail closed is necessary to ensure public safety. Authorities have stated that the restriction will remain in place until experts determine that all risks have been fully mitigated.

An updated announcement will be issued once conditions improve and the gorge is deemed safe for reopening.
