A new twist on an old idea is getting young students to school safely in Nicosia: walking together in what officials are calling a “walking bus.”
The pilot program, launched in the Aglantzia district, has children walking to school in groups, accompanied by municipal escorts and traffic police to ensure safety. The initiative is the result of a collaboration between teachers, parents, local authorities, and the Ministry of Education.
Mayor Charalambos Prontos celebrated the program on social media, saying, “Sometimes innovation means returning to simple things that we did in our childhood. Walking to our neighborhood school today, accompanied by traffic wardens for safety.”
Prontos thanked everyone involved, including the municipality’s transport engineer Christina Christodoulou, traffic police officers, parents, school staff, and Deputy Mayor Andreas Konstantinou.
Officials hope the walking bus model can eventually expand to 90 schools across Nicosia, bringing benefits for traffic, the environment, and the social development of children.
