Belgium to recognize Palestinian state at U.N. assembly

Move comes as Brussels also plans sanctions against Israel’s government.

Belgium plans to officially recognize the state of Palestine during this month’s United Nations General Assembly in New York, the country’s foreign minister said Monday.

Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that Belgium will announce the recognition at the same time it rolls out “strict sanctions” against Israel’s government.

The move follows a July announcement by French President Emmanuel Macron, who said France will also recognize Palestine during the Sept. 9–23 U.N. session.

More than a dozen Western nations have recently urged other governments around the world to follow suit and recognize a Palestinian state.
