According to police, 19-year-old Matiss Daniels from Latvia was riding his high-torque motorcycle in east Limassol on Saturday after midnight. The biker reportedly was driving on Giannitson Street around 1am when he suddenly lost control and fell off his motorbike. He was then dragged on the asphalt until he struck the pavement.
Daniels, a permanent resident of Cyprus, was then rushed to the Emergency Room at Limassol General Hospital where doctors on duty pronounced him dead on arrival.
Media reports said the man had been wearing his protective helmet during the accident. It was not clear whether any other vehicles were involved in the incident.
Police initially withheld the name of the victim, until next of kin identified the body and Daniels’ parents were notified in Latvia.
Local woman killed in Paphos accident
The incident came just hours after another fatal accident took place in Paphos, where 36-year-old Chrystalla Koumoushi was killed when a pickup truck broadsided her car in a brutal side impact collision.
Reports said Koumoushi was attempting to make a U-turn when a pickup truck driven by a 27-year-old male slammed into her vehicle.
The male driver, who has been detained by Paphos police following the accident, was scheduled to have surgery but was said to be out of danger. A Breathalyzer test showed zero alcohol consumption.
Police told Knews his arrest following the accident took place in order to facilitate the pending investigation, but it was not immediately clear whether he was facing any charges. It was understood that he did not appear before a judge on Sunday for a remand hearing.
