The corpse of a man was spotted at a beach in Ayia Napa on Monday morning, with authorities trying to establish the identity of the body already in the process of decomposition.

According to local media, marine police and coast guard officials in Ayia Napa were alerted Monday morning after a concerned citizen spotted a body near rocks in the water around 8:30am. Local media said the man, who works as an installation inspector, saw the body in the water and immediately called authorities.

It was reported that the body appeared to belong to a black adult male but police told Knews identity was still unknown

It was initially reported in local media that the body appeared to belong to a foreign man, possibly of African descent, while police told Knews the identity of the individual was still unknown and under investigation.

Police also confirmed reports that the body appeared to be in the process of decomposition but stopped short of saying which stage, saying only that the body was bloated.

State forensic pathologists were called to an area where the body was pulled ashore. It was then trasported to Famagusta General Hospital, where further tests will take place to establish his identity as well as ascertain the time and cause of death.
