A 6-year-old boy was seriously injured early Sunday after falling from a height of about nine meters (30 feet) in Nicosia, authorities said.

Police said the child woke up around 2:20 a.m. and went looking for his mother, who was working at a restaurant at the time. Unable to find her, he opened a kitchen window in an attempt to reach the yard, lost his balance and fell.

Neighbors who heard the boy crying called emergency services. He was taken by ambulance to Nicosia General Hospital.

Doctors said the boy’s injuries are serious but not life-threatening.
