British Bases warn against swimming at Lady’s Mile due to contaminated water

Tests show high bacteria levels; public urged to avoid swimming until further notice.

Press Release

The British Bases have issued a warning against swimming at Lady’s Mile beach after tests revealed unsafe levels of enterococci bacteria in the seawater.

“Recent water samples show that the area does not meet the standards for safe swimming,” officials said in a statement Friday. “The health of our community and the protection of the environment are our top priorities.”

Authorities urged the public to avoid entering the water until further notice. The British Bases said they are working with environmental experts from both the Sovereign Base Areas and the Republic of Cyprus to identify the source of the contamination and mitigate its impact.

Additional test results are expected early next week.

A spokesperson confirmed that local municipalities, community leaders, and restaurant owners have been notified. Base Police have posted warning signs along the beach, are conducting patrols, and are informing visitors of the situation.
