Brutal killing of Yannis Argyros: 19 stab wounds, drugs, and a café full of clues

Limassol murder stuns community as chilling details emerge from autopsy and court proceedings

Newsroom

The murder of 45-year-old Yannis Argyros has shocked Cyprus, with authorities revealing the victim was stabbed 19 times in a savage attack that has led to the arrest of two people. According to forensic examiners, Argyros died of massive blood loss after suffering multiple wounds to his chest and vital organs.

Argyros was found dead by his mother on the morning of Sunday, May 4, in the garage of their apartment building in the Neapolis area of Limassol. She had become worried after he failed to return from an evening walk, which he had apparently planned with one of the suspects.

Two people, a 52-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman, are now in police custody, held under an eight-day remand order issued by the Limassol District Court. They are facing serious charges, including premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, and drug possession involving Class A substances (cocaine).

A bloody trail to a local café

The 52-year-old suspect was arrested at a nearby café in Agios Athanasios, where witnesses say he looked visibly distressed and had bloodstains on his clothes. Shocking eyewitness reports suggest the man confessed on the spot, telling those around him that he had committed the murder and why.

Police recovered a folding knife and a mobile phone at the café, which are now undergoing forensic testing. A knife sheath was also found on the man, while his vehicle has been impounded for further examination.

The suspect, however, is reportedly not cooperating with investigators.

The woman's testimony and the drug link

The 47-year-old woman, who was also at the scene in the garage, gave her version of events. She told police that when she left, Argyros was still alive. However, she also admitted that the suspect later confessed the killing to her. She further revealed that all three individuals were using cocaine that night.

Authorities are now piecing together exactly what happened in the garage—and what may have triggered the violent outburst. Investigators are also probing the relationship dynamics between Argyros and the suspect, with early witness accounts indicating the 52-year-old had threatened to harm Argyros in the past.

More evidence to come

The investigation is far from over. Police are still working through about 35 witness statements and have two active search warrants for further evidence.

In total, forensic examiners counted over ten stab wounds, with many focused on the chest. The depth and force of the wounds indicate a violent attack, likely fueled by drugs, personal tension, or both. The autopsy confirmed that the fatal injuries were inflicted by a stabbing and cutting weapon.

Argyros was known to authorities due to previous involvement in drug-related cases, adding another layer of complexity to the investigation.
