Scammers hijack parking machines with fake QR codes

Municipality warns public to ignore stickers on ticket machines, online payment system doesn't exist.

A new scam is making the rounds in Limassol, with fraudsters tricking unsuspecting drivers by slapping fake QR codes on parking ticket machines in municipal car parks.

According to a public warning issued by the Limassol Municipality, these bogus stickers are being placed illegally on automatic ticket machines in various parking areas around the city. The QR codes lead to fraudulent payment websites, aiming to fool drivers into entering their card details and effectively handing over their money to scammers.

The municipality stressed that no online payment system exists for municipal parking at this time, and there is no official method for paying via QR code. Any such codes found on machines are completely fake and should be avoided.

Limassol officials are urging the public to remain alert and only use the designated buttons and ticket slots on the machines for payment. If anyone spots a suspicious QR code sticker, they are advised to report it to municipal staff or the police immediately.

Authorities are investigating the matter and working to remove the fraudulent stickers. The municipality has also hinted that it may look into modernizing the parking payment system in the future, but for now, stick to coins or cards at the machine – not your phone.
