Police warn of scam texts demanding payment for traffic fines

Authorities urge the public not to click on suspicious links or share personal information

Newsroom

Cyprus police are sounding the alarm over a wave of scam messages being sent via social media and mobile phones, claiming recipients must pay fines for alleged traffic violations.

According to the Cybercrime Subdivision of the Police Headquarters, these fake messages attempt to trick people into clicking suspicious links that supposedly lead to online payment portals. However, these links are a trap, designed to steal personal or banking information or even siphon off money from unsuspecting victims.

The police stressed that they never contact individuals in this manner.

“These messages are fraudulent and dangerous,” the statement read. “Their only goal is to deceive you.”

Citizens are urged to stay vigilant and follow these precautions:

- Do not click on unknown or suspicious links.
- Do not share any personal or financial information.
- Be especially cautious with text messages (SMS) that redirect you to unfamiliar websites.

If you receive such a message, it’s best to delete it immediately and report it to the authorities.

The police continue to receive reports about these scams and are actively investigating. In the meantime, they remind the public that staying alert is the first line of defense against digital fraud.
