The National Guard recorded a 45% decrease in accidents in 2024 compared to the previous year, marking the lowest number of incidents on record, Chief of the National Guard Georgios Tsitsikostas announced Friday.

The data was presented during an event titled “Safety and Health in the National Guard,” organized by the Directorate of Hygiene and Safety (DYGA) of the General Staff of the National Guard (GEEF).

According to an official statement, the collection, analysis, and classification of accidents helped identify causes and inform the development of preventive measures, contributing to the significant reduction.

“This major decrease demonstrates that the work of the relevant department of the General Staff, along with all levels of command, is moving in the right direction,” Tsitsikostas said.

He emphasized that while the progress is noteworthy, the National Guard must not become complacent. The safety of personnel and the reduction of losses remain top priorities, he said, and must be pursued with continued intensity to achieve the ultimate goal of zero accidents.

Looking ahead to 2025, Tsitsikostas stressed the importance of thorough risk assessment, implementation of mitigation strategies, and strict enforcement of safety protocols in all activities.

He noted that the National Guard is a dynamic organization engaged in many high-risk operations, even as part of its daily routine. As such, adherence to safety procedures must be upheld at every level, from the newest recruits to the most senior officers.

Tsitsikostas also called for a deeper commitment to personnel welfare, stating that human resources should not be viewed as a force multiplier only in theory, but respected and protected in all aspects of management.

“Our ongoing and primary objective remains: Zero Accidents / No Losses in Peacetime,” he said.
