A 76-year-old man was killed on the Limassol-Paphos highway after stopping to retrieve a refrigerator that had apparently fallen from the back of his pickup truck.
The fatal collision happened beyond the tunnel in the direction of Paphos.
Initial investigations suggest the man was travelling with the refrigerator in his double-cab pickup when, under circumstances still being investigated, the appliance fell onto the road.
He stopped and got out of the vehicle to place it back onto the pickup. While he was standing on the carriageway, he was struck by a passing minibus and suffered fatal injuries.
The man’s grandson was reportedly travelling in the pickup with him and was not injured.
British Bases police officers were called to the scene and are investigating exactly how the collision occurred. A statement is also expected to be taken from the minibus driver.
The Limassol-Paphos highway toward Paphos has remained closed for several hours because of the accident, causing disruption for motorists travelling west. Drivers should avoid the area and follow police directions until the road reopens.
