Burning bright: Agreement reached on Easter bonfire bill

New legislation aims to keep the spirit of the Easter bonfire alive, safely

Press Release

The draft bill regulating the tradition of the Easter Bonfire, along with discussions on addressing current issues, was discussed in a meeting held on Friday at the Ministry of Justice and Public Order. The meeting was attended by the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Marios Hartsiotis, the President of the Union of Municipalities, Andreas Vyras, and representatives from the Union of Municipalities of Cyprus and the Union of Communities of Cyprus.

According to a joint statement from the Ministry of Justice, the Union of Municipalities, and the Union of Communities of Cyprus, all parties agreed that the tradition should continue, provided it remains within the framework of safety and legality.

As a result, the basic principles and framework governing the bill promoted by the Ministry of Justice and Public Order were agreed upon.

Once the bill is finalized by all involved parties, it will be submitted to the Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee for urgent review.

Until the new bill is passed and implemented, it was jointly decided that provincial meetings would be held at the Police Directorates with Local Authorities to ensure the effective enforcement of existing legislation.
