European powers plan for gradual defense shift amid U.S. reduction

European nations prepare for greater defense role as U.S. involvement in NATO faces uncertainty

The UK, France, Germany, and Scandinavian nations are in talks about a long-term strategy to take on greater defense responsibilities in Europe, aiming for a coordinated transition if the U.S. reduces its NATO presence. The plan, set to be presented to the Trump administration before June's NATO summit, includes a significant increase in European defense spending and military capabilities to ease Europe's reliance on the U.S.

While the U.S. remains vital for Europe's security, particularly with its nuclear deterrent and large military presence, European officials recognize the need to raise spending over the next five to ten years to cover most American capabilities. However, concerns linger about whether this effort could spur a faster U.S. disengagement or if the Trump administration will agree to the gradual shift.

Simultaneously, France and the UK are pushing for a European-led coalition to support Ukraine without U.S. involvement, suggesting the possibility of a European "pillar" within NATO. Despite worries, NATO officials argue that, even without the U.S., the alliance can maintain its framework for European security, as long as key members like the UK, Scandinavia, and Turkey stay involved.
