Authorities are continuing their investigation into the dismemberment of a kangaroo by two men in the parking lot of an apartment building in Deryneia. A 36-year-old man from Cameroon has been arrested in connection with the case, which has drawn public outrage. A second suspect, also of African descent, remains at large.
“There is a clear indication of what happened,” said Andreas Konstantinou, spokesperson for the Famagusta Police Directorate. “Statements have been taken, and it appears there is a clear picture of how the animal came into the possession of the man who was arrested.”
Investigators are also examining claims made by the owner of a private farm in the free area of Famagusta, who has been under scrutiny since the early stages of the case.
A key question is whether the kangaroo was alive or dead before it was killed. That determination will be made during a post-mortem scheduled for Monday, conducted by a Veterinary Services official, Konstantinou said.
The Cameroonian suspect faces charges of causing unnecessary pain or injury to an animal, inflicting a cruel death on an animal, possession of a prohibited species, and unlawful residency in the Republic.
The Deryneia Police Station is continuing its investigation.
