Police have arrested a 66-year-old woman, the president of an NGO supporting patients with a specific disease, over allegations of financial fraud exceeding €120,000. The arrest took place on the evening of Monday, December 9, following a court warrant.

According to Stella Markou of 24News, the woman appeared before the Nicosia District Court on Tuesday morning, where an eight-day detention order was issued to facilitate further investigation. She faces multiple charges, including forgery, circulating a forged document, obtaining money by false representation, conspiracy to commit a felony, and conspiracy to defraud.

Court proceedings revealed the alleged scheme involved falsified invoices submitted by the NGO to the Ministry of Health to secure sponsorship funds. These fraudulent claims reportedly enabled the accused to siphon substantial sums from the organization.

Authorities are intensifying their investigation, with the ICF Headquarters examining evidence and planning to collect an additional 45 statements. Police have not ruled out further arrests as the case unfolds.

This arrest has shocked the community, as the NGO in question was trusted to provide essential support to vulnerable patients. The scandal raises questions about oversight and accountability within charitable organizations.
