Cyprus gears up for a week-long celebration of wine, culture, and camaraderie

Get ready to raise your glasses as the 14th Cyprus Wine Competition, a testament to the nation's devotion to the wine sector, is just around the corner! From May 22 to May 26, 2023, Cyprus will host a vibrant extravaganza dedicated to the art of winemaking, attracting wine aficionados from far and wide.

Under the auspices of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, Mr. Petros Xenophontos, and with the support of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), the Department of Agriculture has organized this competition, emphasizing the significance of further developing Cyprus' wine industry.

To kick off the exciting week, a press conference will be held on Monday, May 22, 2023, at 9:00 am. The St Raphael Resort & Marina Hotel in Limassol will set the stage, welcoming Mr. Petros Xenophontos, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, along with the Mayor of Limassol, Mr. Nikos Nikolaidis. Together, they will announce the official start of the competition, igniting a spirit of anticipation and delight.

The Department of Agriculture has joined forces with several organizations to ensure a memorable event. Collaborating bodies such as the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, the Municipality of Limassol, and associations like the Cyprus Winemakers' Association, the Cyprus Graduate Winemakers' Association, and the Pancypriot Winemakers' Association, have pooled their efforts to make this extravaganza a resounding success. Also lending their support are the Cyprus Oinophiles' Association, the OinoArts Oinophiles' Group, and the Famagusta Oinophiles' Association "Bacchus," adding an extra layer of enthusiasm to the proceedings.

A panel of international experts, led by the distinguished Prof. Antonio Morata, will serve as the competition's esteemed jury. Prof. Morata, appointed as the President of the Commission by the International Organization of Vine and Wine, will oversee the proceedings and ensure adherence to the internationally recognized "Standard for International Wine and Spirituous Beverages of Vitivinicultural Origin Competitions" established by the OIV.

As part of this wine-filled extravaganza, the Department of Agriculture has arranged a technical workshop on Wednesday, May 24, 2023. From 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, the "Panos Solomonidis" Cultural Center in Limassol will be abuzz with lively discussions and engaging presentations. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to learn from the knowledgeable competition jury members, who will generously share their expertise and experiences in the captivating world of winemaking.

The pinnacle of the week's events will be the highly anticipated award ceremony and official dinner, set to take place on Friday, May 26, 2023, at 7:00 pm. The St Raphael Resort & Marina Hotel will host this enchanting evening, where winemakers, wine enthusiasts, and honored guests will gather to celebrate the outstanding achievements of the competition's winners.
