The holiday spirit took an unfortunate hit in Larnaca this week after unknown vandals damaged and stole parts of the city’s Christmas decorations, including items from the main Christmas tree in Europe Square.
In a statement, the municipality said it felt “deep sorrow and frustration” over the incidents, which included damage to a snowman figure installed as part of the festive setup. Officials also reported thefts and vandalism at the city’s Christmas tree, the fountain lights, and other decorated spots around the square.
“Unfortunately, unknown individuals caused damage to a snowman figure and other parts of the Christmas décor,” the municipality said, noting that even lights around the fountain were ripped out or broken.
Local officials are now urging residents to help protect the city’s decorations so everyone can enjoy the season without further incidents.
The municipality also issued a call for information: anyone who may have seen something or knows details about the vandalism is encouraged to contact Larnaca Police to help track down those responsible.
Despite the setback, the city says efforts to restore the decorations are underway, hoping the holiday cheer can make a quick comeback.
