Applications are open for the Access City Award allowing cities to highlight award-winning disabled-friendly urban spaces

Newsroom

Nicosia, Limassol, Famagusta and Paphos now have the chance to exhibit their achievements in creating disabled-friendly urban spaces as European cities compete for the prestigious Access City Award. The award recognizes cities across Europe that have undertaken exceptional work to enhance accessibility and inclusivity for persons with disabilities.

Organized by the European Commission in collaboration with the European Disability Forum, the competition's 2024 edition introduces a special mention category, spotlighting cities whose accessibility initiatives align with the principles of the New European Bauhaus - emphasizing sustainability, aesthetics, and inclusiveness.

With applications open to all EU cities of over 50,000 inhabitants or urban areas composed of multiple towns with a combined population exceeding 50,000 residents, Cyprus cities have a prime opportunity to display their efforts in creating welcoming spaces for everyone, including individuals with disabilities.

A financial prize awaits the winning cities, with €150,000 for the first-place city, €120,000 for the runner-up, and €80,000 for the third position. Expert juries will assess the measures taken and planned in the built environment, public spaces, transportation, infrastructure, information and communication, and public facilities.

The Access City Award not only celebrates cities' achievements but also encourages continuous improvement in fostering accessible and inclusive environments for all citizens.
