The government is focused on developing a new national strategy for disability, aiming to enhance the integration and well-being of persons with disabilities. Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Marilena Evangelou, highlighted the government's goals during a press conference held on World Multiple Sclerosis Day. The strategy will involve comprehensive measures with measurable objectives, developed in collaboration with civil society organizations. Additionally, the Deputy Minister mentioned the importance of amending the Law on Persons with Disabilities to align it with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Evangelou emphasized the need to strengthen efforts towards the full integration of individuals with multiple sclerosis into society. To achieve this, the government intends to modernize social protection policies by introducing new services, including the provision of Personal Assistants and Advisors. The Deputy Minister acknowledged the challenges faced by people with multiple sclerosis and emphasized ongoing communication with affected individuals to address their concerns and seek viable solutions.
She also commended the Association of Multiple Sclerosis for its support services, which contribute to alleviating problems, combating marginalization, and promoting active participation. Evangelou highlighted various financial benefits and care services available to individuals with disabilities, such as Disability Allowances, Severe Mobility Disability Allowances, Care Allowances, Transport Allowances, financial assistance for essential equipment, holiday grants, and parking passes.
Furthermore, the Deputy Minister expressed the government's commitment to increasing employment opportunities for people with disabilities. According to the law, public sector positions are reserved for individuals with disabilities through a quota system. The government provides subsidies to organizations and bodies to offer programs and services that support the employment and integration of people with disabilities.
By pursuing these initiatives, Cyprus aims to create an inclusive and supportive environment that respects the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities.
