A group of five individuals, including four prison guards and a probation officer, was arrested Thursday in connection with the discovery of classified documents at the home of a prison guard last month, police said.

The arrests followed warrants issued by the Nicosia District Court and stem from an ongoing investigation that began on April 10, when sensitive official documents were found during a search of the guard’s residence.

Police said in a statement that evidence gathered so far links the five to the case, which involves possible misuse of public authority and unauthorized handling of confidential material. Among the serious charges under investigation are conspiracy to commit felonies, abuse of power, theft by public officials, illegal possession of property, and breach of official secrecy laws, including violations of the Personal Data Processing Law.

Authorities have not yet revealed what type of documents were found or how they might have been used.

The suspects are expected to appear in court Friday for detention hearings as the investigation, led by the Crime Suppression Department’s Operations Unit, continues.
