Two young women died after being caught in strong sea currents near the coast of Oroklini on Thursday evening, according to preliminary information from authorities.

Police and emergency services responded to reports that several people had encountered difficulties while swimming near the area's breakwaters. Rescue efforts were launched after members of the group called for assistance.

Initial findings indicate that at least three people were swept away by the current after entering the water. Although rescuers managed to save one person, two women were recovered from the sea and were later confirmed dead.

The victims have been identified as 20-year-old women from Somalia who were legally residing and working in Cyprus.

Investigators from Oroklini Police Station are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and gathering statements from witnesses who were present at the beach.

Authorities continue to collect evidence as they seek to establish a full account of the events that led to the fatal drownings.
