A prehistoric Cypriot ceramic vessel nearly 4,000 years old has been returned to Cyprus after authorities discovered it had been listed in an online auction, the Department of Antiquities said.

The artefact is a black-polished hemispherical bowl decorated with incised patterns. It belongs to the Early Cypriot III to Middle Cypriot I period and dates to around 1900 BC, making it approximately 3,926 years old.

The bowl was recovered following a year-long international effort involving the Department of Antiquities, Cyprus Police, Interpol, the Ministry of Justice and Public Order of Cyprus, and Canada’s Department of Justice.

According to the department, the individual in possession of the antiquity agreed to return it to Cyprus after the object was identified. The vessel has now been repatriated to its country of origin.
