Forecast: Blue skies by default, thunderstorms by appointment

Sunshine to dominate across the island through Monday.

Newsroom

The weather can't quite make up its mind. While sunshine will continue to dominate Cyprus through Monday, the atmosphere remains just unstable enough to throw in the odd afternoon shower or thunderstorm for good measure.

Today starts on a bright note, although a few sleepy patches of low cloud or fog may be slow to leave the stage in some areas. By lunchtime, however, the mountains will begin doing what they do best in June: brewing up clouds that could trigger isolated showers or a thunderstorm. As always, any thunderstorm comes with the usual warning label of brief heavy rain and the possibility of hail.

Winds will begin light and variable before settling into a southwesterly to northwesterly breeze. The sea will remain calm to slight, making for generally pleasant conditions along the coast.

Temperatures will reach 34°C inland, around 30°C on the east, southeast and north coasts, 28°C elsewhere along the shoreline and a much fresher 24°C in the higher mountains.

Tonight will be mostly clear, although low cloud may drift across parts of the west. Later, mist and fog could pay an early-morning visit to inland and eastern districts before quietly disappearing after sunrise.

The weekend and Monday look set to follow a familiar script: plenty of sunshine, rising afternoon cloud and the chance of a few isolated showers or thunderstorms over the mountains, inland areas and parts of the east.

Temperatures are expected to remain close to seasonal averages, meaning Cyprus will continue to feel very much like Cyprus in June; hot, sunny and just unpredictable enough to keep meteorologists employed.
