Cyprus Customs returns stolen ancient coins to Department of Antiquities

Two priceless artifacts seized in customs checks are safely returned to preserve Cyprus' cultural heritage.

In a significant step toward preserving Cyprus' rich cultural heritage, the Customs Department recently handed over two ancient coins to the Department of Antiquities. The coins, which had been illegally trafficked, were found during routine parcel checks at the Mail Sorting Center in 2022 and 2023.

The first coin, discovered on January 31, 2022, was identified as a silver stater from the ruler Kherei of Lycia, dating back to around 410–390 BC. The coin had been sent from the United Kingdom, but the recipient failed to provide the necessary documents proving lawful ownership. As a result, it was seized by the Customs Department after a consultation with the Department of Antiquities.

The second coin was also found in 2023 during similar routine checks, further underscoring the vital role that customs officers play in combating the illegal trade in cultural artifacts.

The act of returning these coins highlights the ongoing efforts by Cyprus to protect its historical treasures and combat the illicit trafficking of cultural heritage items. The Customs Department has made it a priority to stop the illegal movement of antiquities and artifacts, working closely with the Department of Antiquities to ensure that these items are returned to their rightful place.

Both coins will now be preserved in Cyprus' cultural archives, enriching the nation's understanding of its ancient past and preventing valuable pieces of history from falling into the wrong hands.

This event is just one of many instances in recent years where stolen artifacts have been recovered and returned to their rightful homes. In a time when the global art and antiquities market is under scrutiny, this serves as a reminder of the ongoing importance of safeguarding cultural heritage and returning stolen artifacts to where they belong.
