Cyprus Environmental Movement sounds alarm over deteriorating condition of Akrotiri Salt Lake

Environmental group calls for immediate action to prevent further damage and protect vital wildlife

Newsroom

The Cyprus Environmental Movement has issued an urgent call for help regarding the Akrotiri Salt Lake, warning that one of the country’s last major wetlands is on the brink of extinction due to human activities driven by the profit motives of a few entrepreneurs.

The Movement urges the government to take immediate action to halt the destruction of the area and demands an investigation to hold those responsible for polluting the lake accountable. They also call for the restoration of the wetland.

Despite previous assurances from the relevant authorities, the situation continues to worsen. Pollution has already caused a sharp decline in the flamingo population and other important wildlife species. The Movement states that the ongoing neglect and failure to implement effective measures amount to criminal negligence against Cyprus' natural environment.
