Foreign Affairs Minister Constantinos Kombos has stated that the upcoming meeting between the Presidents of the United States and Cyprus in Washington will hold significant symbolic and political weight. Speaking in Nicosia after a meeting with Luxembourg's Foreign Minister, Kombos expressed optimism for a productive dialogue, which will build on the recent strategic discussions held in Nicosia.

Kombos emphasized that the upgrade to a presidential level for these talks is particularly important. The agenda will cover various aspects of bilateral relations, including citizen connections, business collaborations, investment opportunities, and cooperative efforts amid challenging circumstances.

The Minister pointed out that the relationship between Cyprus and the U.S. has been developing for several months, and both sides are eager to strengthen this partnership. Topics of discussion will also include the evacuation of citizens, outlining how Cyprus can assist the U.S. in managing potential crises in the region.

A key issue on the agenda is the longstanding Cyprus problem, which Kombos described as "of existential importance" to Cyprus. He indicated that this topic would be raised by both sides during the meeting. He also expressed hope that the Turkish leadership would recognize the importance of engaging in serious negotiations regarding the Cyprus issue, particularly in light of statements promoting "two states" and "sovereign equality," which he argued fall outside the UN Security Council framework.

Regarding Cyprus's recent communication with the UN, Kombos noted that a response from the organization is typically not expected soon. He conveyed Cyprus's gratitude for the UN Secretary-General's initiatives and called for swift actions regarding the next steps in resolving the Cyprus issue.

Kombos concluded by expressing a desire for progress, stating, "We would like it to even happen tomorrow," while reaffirming Cyprus's commitment to moving forward as quickly as possible.
