Cyprus’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a Travel Advice on Tuesday, advising Cypriot citizens to leave Ukraine, due to the increased tension in the region.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry, citizens of the Republic of Cyprus who permanently live or are temporarily in Ukraine are urged to leave the country while direct commercial flights are still operating.  The Ministry is also reminding citizens that, in case of a rise in tensions, airlines may change or suspend their flight schedules to and from the country, making it difficult to leave Ukraine.

The press release continued to advise Cypriot citizens, who regard their presence in the country as necessary, to provide their contact details by registering on the online platform www.connect2cy.gov.cy and/or by communicating with the Embassy of the Cyprus Republic in Kyiv as well as Cyprus’ Foreign Ministry.

A total of 140 Cypriot citizens of the Republic of Cyprus who live permanently or are temporarily in Ukraine have already registered on the Foreign Ministry's platform, Ministry spokesperson, Demetris Demetriou, told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).

Demetriou said that, as of this moment, no chartered flights are needed to evacuate Cypriots from Ukraine as there are still commercial flights operating.

“We have the details of 140 citizens who are in Ukraine on the platform. We have sent them an SMS with the telephone numbers of the Embassy there and of the Ministry`s Crisis Management Department here, as well as relevant links with travel advice we have issued,” he added.

Furthermore, he noted that Cypriot citizens who are temporarily in Ukraine are few compared to the majority who registered on the platform who live there permanently.

The Ministry has invited citizens of the Republic of Cyprus who permanently live or are temporarily anywhere in Ukraine to register on the online platform www.connect2cy.gov.cy or to communicate directly with the Consular Department of the Embassy to provide their contact details.
