Cyprus has been named the world leader in voluntary unpaid blood donation when measured against population size, according to the Ministry of Health.

Marking World Blood Donor Day on June 14, celebrated this year under the slogan “A Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.”, the ministry praised the commitment of thousands of donors across the island.

Officials said Cyprus collected 74,279 units of blood, placing it at the top of the global rankings relative to population. The ministry attributed this achievement to the strong culture of solidarity and civic responsibility demonstrated by residents.

Health authorities stressed that regular blood donations are essential for maintaining sufficient reserves and supporting the day-to-day needs of the healthcare system.

In a joint message, the Ministry of Health and the Blood Centre thanked blood and platelet donors for their ongoing contribution, saying their generosity provides critical support to thousands of people each year.

The public was also encouraged to take part in blood donation efforts, with officials urging eligible individuals to join the large community of volunteers already contributing to this effort.

According to the ministry, a single unit of donated blood can benefit as many as three patients, helping those undergoing surgery, receiving transfusions, recovering from accidents, or living with serious and long-term medical conditions.
