Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and the Environment, Petros Xenophontos, stated on Saturday that organic production in Cyprus has made significant progress over the last two decades.
The Minister addressed the 1st Annual Organic Farming Festival, held in Deneia, in celebration of the European Day of Organic Production.
During his speech, he noted that according to the Register of the Department of Agriculture, organic farming has expanded from occupying 0.22% of the total cultivated area in 2003 to its current 5.87%.
"Our objective is to reach 7.5% by 2025," he emphasized.
Furthermore, he highlighted that the number of organic farmers has grown from 85 in 2003 to 1500 today.
Minister Xenophontos also discussed the Ministry's programs designed to support organic farming.
