A planned trilateral meeting between President Nikos Christodoulides, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman and UN Secretary-General António Guterres did not take place in New York after Erhürman declined to participate, according to government sources cited by CNA.
The meeting had been sought by Guterres as part of his contacts with the two sides on the Cyprus issue. However, the Turkish Cypriot leader did not agree to the proposed format, preventing the three-way meeting from going ahead.
Christodoulides will now return to Cyprus from New York as originally scheduled, according to the same government sources.
The development comes as the UN continues its efforts to facilitate contact between the two Cypriot leaders and support dialogue on the Cyprus problem.
