Cyprus marked a milestone in its diplomatic outreach Monday with the official opening of its new embassy in Bahrain, signaling the island nation’s intent to deepen ties not only with Bahrain but with the wider Gulf region.

The inauguration was led by President Nikos Christodoulides, concluding a two-day official visit at the invitation of Bahrain’s king. The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Bahraini government, as well as members of the Cypriot delegation.

“Opening an embassy here underscores the great importance Cyprus attaches to strengthening relations with Bahrain and all Gulf countries,” the Cypriot presidency said in a statement.

Cyprus is now one of only four European Union member states to maintain an embassy in Bahrain, a move officials say highlights the government’s commitment to closer political and economic cooperation in the region.

Bahrain, which currently holds a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council and the 2026-2027 presidency of the Gulf Cooperation Council, has been seen as a strategic partner for Cyprus, offering opportunities for collaboration across diplomacy, trade, and security.

The new embassy is expected to serve as a hub for expanding bilateral cooperation, from political dialogue to business ventures, and reflects Cyprus’ growing engagement with Gulf countries amid a shifting regional landscape.
