Cyprus police have dismantled an alleged forgery ring accused of producing fake rental agreements that were later used in attempts to secure student registration status in the country, authorities said.

According to police, nine people have been arrested in connection with the case following an investigation by officers from the Famagusta CID.

Investigators allege the suspects created fake tenancy agreements using forged stamps and then supplied the documents to other people of the same nationality.

The documents were allegedly submitted, along with other paperwork, to the Aliens and Immigration Service of Famagusta in an effort to obtain registration as students in Cyprus.

Police said the arrests took place between April 17 and April 28 as evidence against the suspects emerged during the investigation.

Authorities said the investigation has now been completed, and the case was officially filed before the Famagusta District Court on April 28.

The court ordered that all nine suspects remain in custody until May 15, when they are due to appear before the court again.

Police have not released further details about the identities or nationalities of those arrested.
