The Cyprus Police are significantly intensifying road safety and law enforcement operations throughout the and Epiphany holiday period, placing priority on the protection of citizens and the prevention of serious road collisions.
Due to the expected increase in traffic during the festive season, police presence is being reinforced on major urban road arteries, intercity roads, motorways, and the secondary road network. Enhanced traffic checks began on Monday, 22 December, and will continue until 6 January 2025.
The focus of the checks is on traffic violations that are proven to be the leading causes of fatal and serious road accidents. These include excessive speed, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure to use seat belts or protective helmets, use of mobile phones while driving, and reckless, dangerous, or negligent driving. Patrol cars and targeted checkpoints are being deployed nationwide as part of this effort.
As part of these intensified operations, a large-scale police operation was carried out over the weekend. In one night alone, 572 driver checks were conducted, resulting in 258 reports for various traffic offenses. A total of 470 breathalyzer tests were administered, with 49 drivers found to be over the legal alcohol limit and reported for driving under the influence. Additionally, two drivers tested positive during preliminary drug tests.
During the same operation, eight vehicles were seized for further examination in connection with traffic-related offenses. Two individuals were also arrested; one in Limassol, who was wanted in relation to a serious assault case, and one in Nicosia for refusing to provide a satisfactory sample for a final alcohol test.
The Cyprus Police emphasize that these actions are part of a broader, continuously strengthened strategy to enhance road safety and combat criminal behavior during the holiday period. The message to the public is clear: zero tolerance for dangerous and illegal driving, so that all citizens can travel safely during the festive season.
