Cyprus skies to glow with enchanting ‘Blood Moon’ tonight

The Moon will blush a deep, celestial red during a total lunar eclipse visible across the island.

Newsroom

Tonight, the skies above Cyprus will stage a quietly mesmerizing spectacle as the Moon slips into Earth’s shadow, transforming into a “Blood Moon.” This final lunar eclipse of the year offers a rare chance to witness our closest celestial neighbor draped in shades of crimson.

The Troodos Observatory is opening its doors to the public, inviting stargazers to experience the romance of the cosmos firsthand. The eclipse begins gently at 6:59 p.m. with the subtle penumbral phase, a delicate dimming barely noticeable to the eye. By 7:28 p.m., the Moon will enter a partial eclipse, setting the stage for totality at 8:30 p.m., when it will glow a rich, fiery red. The Moon reaches its most dramatic moment at 9:12 p.m., lingering in this sanguine splendor for about 1 hour and 21 minutes before gradually retreating from Earth’s shadow, with the full display concluding at 11:55 p.m. Overall, the dance of shadow and light will span 5 hours and 27 minutes.

Unlike the Sun, the Moon’s fiery transformation can be enjoyed safely with the naked eye. For the most magical view, observers are encouraged to seek a clear western horizon, free from the distractions of city lights, and let the night sky sweep them into its quiet, cosmic embrace.
